Notes From The Awareness: 205

Artificial = made without spiritual inspiration.

Please discuss. How does this play out in life?

I’ll start us out. Our civilized society abounds in man-made materials—artificial turf, silk plants and flowers, plastic wood, fake leather. We use chemistry to create what we believe are functional replicas of natural materials, hoping that their artificial composition will lend them more durability, easier maintenance, greater affordability.

On the surface, it may appear that these products are an improvement over their natural counterparts. However, there are hidden costs and tradeoffs when substituting man-made items for more natural ones. Many of these goods are manufactured using non-renewable natural resources. The growing presence of artificial, chemically-created products in our homes and lifestyles may present longer-term health challenges. On a spiritual level, ersatz items don’t give us the same sense of connection as those arising from natural materials.

Today’s message reminds me to surround myself, as much as possible, with naturally-sourced items. Doing so will lessen my impact on the planet, can improve my health, and will foster a greater sense of natural connection in me. Keeping my interactions with others natural— not simulating artificial emotions or reactions —will contribute to my sense of well being and help build authentic relationships. Living as naturally as possible with the confines of our current civilization will help me be happier and more aware of interconnection.

How about you? How do you feel about the artificial?
