Notes from the furlough: Day 64

What do you believe in? Devote time to that.

Please discuss. How does this play out in life?

I’ll start us out. 2020 has been a year of clarity for many of us. The changes and upheavals have provided opportunities to evaluate our lives, and social distancing, and unemployment for some of us, have offered time for pondering and soul searching. We’ve noted, for us and for society as a whole, what is and isn’t working. Our beliefs about ourselves, our lives, and how things ought to be have been refined. While the changes have been hard, the insights and understanding are useful and perhaps overdue.

Today’s message reminds me that it is not enough to believe and think differently. The changes need to be realized in action and behavior. If I determine I need to spend less on discretionary items, I need to use that lens to evaluate future purchases. Strong political opinions should be supported by my vote, at the very least. Frustration with social justice issues should affect how I treat others and allow others to be treated. Concern for the environment should prompt alterations in what I consume and how I behave. It’s time for me to back my beliefs with my time and actions.

How about you? Do you feel you’re honoring your beliefs?
