Surprise me

Why have you given yourself an appointed task? It is counterproductive to serendipity. Let the task find you.

We want our lives to have purpose and meaning. We’d like to have a clear life path. It’s reaffirming to feel we’re doing the right things, at the right time. We want to know we’re on the right track.

For many of us, this is a struggle. If we do all the things we think are “good”, it may feel like we’re not honoring our own inner desires. If we pursue our own agenda, it somehow seems selfish. How do we balance our own enjoyment and a spiritual lifestyle?

This seems a difficult thing to figure out, all on our own. And it is. But we’re forgetting the essential truth of our existence: we are all divinely interconnected–everyone and everything. We have the assistance and resources of all creation at our disposal in every moment. We don’t have to find our way through life alone. We have all the help that we are willing to accept.

Through the power of serendipity, life will generate the precise circumstances we need to understand our role and purpose in existence. We merely need to get out of the way. This sounds simple, but how do we do it? How do we let the universe (aka the sharing) navigate for us?

Let’s take a few minutes to connect with our inner divinity—our sharing within—to see how this might work. We will begin by relaxing our breath. We’ll let our breathing become soft and regular. As we do so, we will release any daily cares and concerns.

Continuing to breathe gently and rhythmically, we will picture our sharing within as a globe of golden light in the center of our heart region. The light grows strong and bright with each breath in, and it spreads out through us and our environment as we exhale. We will continue breathing easily and visualizing the golden light until we feel calm, peaceful, and secure—the hallmark of conscious connection with our sharing within.

Next we will reflect on the last week and identify one recent event which unexpectedly fulfilled us, even though it might have been a bit outside of our usual comfort zone. Perhaps we are normally reserved, yet surprisingly found a visit to a karaoke bar to be invigorating and liberating. Perhaps we usually are very self-sufficient, but found pleasure in allowing a loved one to pamper us. Perhaps we were stuck waiting in line for quite a while and had an enlightening and intimate conversation with a complete stranger. Whatever first comes to mind, we will trust that it is perfect for our purposes.

We will ask our sharing within to help us understand the possibilities the event unlocked for us. Perhaps we are learning to be less self-conscious and more uninhibited in our enjoyment of life. Perhaps we are beginning to understand the balance between giving and taking—when we are willing to receive, we have more to share. Perhaps we are finding that when we are emotionally open and candid, in turn we are given more insights and helpful information.

We will thank the sharing for gifting us with the new and beneficial experience and our resultant enhanced awareness. We’ll allow ourselves to savor the experience again and feel fully grateful. Then we will picture ourselves a week from now, feeling thankful that the next step in the progression has revealed itself.  We will allow ourselves to feel deep gratitude for unexpected gifts in the future.

We won’t attempt to picture exactly what future developments might be. We will trust that the sharing will surprise us with fun and helpful episodes. We know that each new and unexpected experience is part of a larger rich and varied pattern, one which helps us understand our purpose and reveals to us the gifts we have to share. Our destiny will find us. We have only to light ourselves with joy, so we may be more easily found.
